Press release.............Latest!

Press statement released 26/06/2006

Llandovery Chamber of Commerce

Secretary: 7 Kings Road, Llandovery SA20 0AW

PRESS STATEMENT

Following Carmarthenshire County Council’s Decision, 12th June 2006, to charge 30p for first half-hour of each car parking stay, the President of Llandovery Chamber of Commerce made the following statement:

“The County Council have clearly NOT listened to us, having lumped us in with other towns by charging this unacceptable tariff – It is grossly reducing visitors and locals to Llandovery - We continue to demand free parking and free toilets in Llandovery”.

In addition, we deplore the council’s attempt to spin their way out of this mess, which is totally of their own making, namely:

  • On the back of FREE money from Europe they refurbished our previously free (and perfectly adequate) car park and then started charging parking – Money for old rope really and an excellent revenue earner for the Council

  • A 30p tariff is an eight-fold increase on the previous 20p for four hours tariff, NOT a reduction as they would have us believe: Hardly the investment (their words) in the rural towns’ economies within Carmarthenshire

  • The Council has only two years figures to analyse numbers and they already show an 18% reduction year-on-year in ‘rural’ parking alone: Again, hardly the investment to conjure enhanced trading within Llandovery

  • The Council fail to admit that they have already have a substantial ‘sales’ deficit: They are only concerned about minimising their budgetary deficit (as a result of the foregoing) and maximising income from any source, even if it means running Llandovery into trading oblivion

  • We have constantly explained that it was NOT just about quick or casual shoppers, but about the wider Llandovery community being allowed to use their own market town with minimal constraints: We are losing key companies and others are contemplating relocation– Llandovery teeters on the edge of economic viability and we have NO government offices as other towns to help stem the loss.

None of us have met Councillor M Gravell OBE who, we are sure, richly deserves her recent honour for sterling service at European, national and county levels. However, in Llandovery, the feeling is that we are a casualty of the great European bonanza, which generates profits for all except this secondary rural settlement (their words) – We will fight on.

Signed

Ms. Hilary Hunt
